Breaking The Sound Barrier Daily

3948963557_071ec7db68_oIn case you didn’t already know, our good friends Akudama have been playing every Tuesday this month at Pianos on Ludlow St. They even shot this video at Union Square to help promote the shows. Anyway, we joined them two nights ago for their Future Show – each week’s show has a different theme – and seriously got into the spirit. Jay was an androgynous space alien; Mike was a nuclear blast survivor who only survived because he wore his underwear on top of his pants; Jason was a futuristic fashionista sporting a tinfoil bowtie and headband; And I wore my 3007 sunglasses that I got in Times Square 998 years in the future. (Pictures of all these things are in the full post.)

That would have been the end of the post… but then we got a comment on Facebook from a photographer who was at the show, stumbled upon us, really liked us, and decided to share the photos he took with us. So, without further ado, here are some photos taken by Hernan Seoane at Pianos on 9/22/2009:

0912091459Jesse Dittmar photographed the album art for the soon-to-be-released album “OK, OK.” Such a badass! Jesse and his crew got the police to shut down Jones St in the West Village for three hours yesterday so we could build an IKEA couch in the middle of the street (the ARILD, I believe) and pose as a band alongside three other versions of ourselves – a younger Julius C, and older Julius C, and a female Julius C – made up to look exactly like us with identical clothes, wigs, glasses, and everything! We walked away with 8 gigs of pure gold that Jesse is now going to melt, mold, and polish into the cover our new album.

Boat load of thanks go out to everyone who came down to Santos Party House in Tribeca last night. It was quite a crowd and we were pleased as punch to play the new songs (and some older ones!) for all of you. For those of you who were not in attendance, allow me to introduce you to the Julius C Cookie Break. While you’re at it, check out our set-closing “My Broken Heart” with guitarsmith Eric Lindberg on the 6-string.

Last night we played at Cafe 939 in Boston, MA – Berklee College of Music’s own music venue. This was only our second time playing there, but as soon as we walked in we were greeted with hugs from Jackie, the owner, and sandwiches in the green room. Couldn’t believe my eyes. I had a BLT… and then another.

939signAfter loading in, we got our acoustic instruments and walked up and down Boylston St and Newbury St playing songs from our new record and promoting the show and… people loved it! We met some fruit stand employees with a good sense of humor, some Parisians for whom we helped flag down a cab, and a college volleyball team from out of town with smiles from ear to ear. We took some video of this and posted it to Youtube.

Then later on we made music. The show was sweeet! We played our set for a room full of excited friends (Thank you Kid:Nap:Kin) and fans and then watched our Brooklyn pals, Apollo Run, do the same… except they had horn players! Fancy! Also, they had their performance broadcasted live on Berklee’s Internet Radio Network. Had I told you this sooner, you could have listened and enjoyed their set along with us… my bad.

So the show was incredible… then we had to drive home. It’s a 4 hour trip that we started around 12:30am. Fuel for the trip: enormous pizza slices and 5 Hour Energy. Smells and tastes like orange soda; that was a surprise. On Jason, our driver on this trip, it totally worked like it should (woohoo), but on Mike it worked like sleeping pills. He was passed out riding shotgun just 5 miles down the road.

The Red Square - Albany, NY

We just left Albany, where we played a really fun show last night at The Red Square with our new chums Skeletons In The Piano from Saratoga, NY and Lauris Vidal from Orlando, FL. Good brews, good tunes, and good burritos – Thanks Jason and Jay, for going out and getting those :)

Lauris Vidal and his band closed the night and we all thought they were amazing. Great musicians with cool songs and great vibe. Check them out! I don’t know how they pull it off but these three guys have been touring with all their gear in (and on top of!) a tiny, tiny Honda Fit! It’s an amazing display of expert packing skills and we tip our hats to them. Like us, they’ll be in Boston tonight and NYC tomorrow. If you go see them, be sure to check out their merch table – Lauris hand printed the t-shirts himself and they look awesome.

Our GPS says we’ll be in Boston in about 2 hours and as soon as we get there we’ll be taking our accoustic instruments to the streets for another day of pop-up pedestrian performances.

Check out some pictures from last night in the full post.

This is a short one. Just wanted to let everyone know that we survived the 5 mile music march through Manhattan yesterday. We met a lot of people and saw smiles appear on hundreds (thousands?) of faces. We had a lot of fun and we’ll definitely be back, doing it all again soon.

So what’s better than finding out that we’re still alive? Answer: Finding out that we videoed (that is a weird word to spell) the whole thing and posted clips to our Youtube page! We have a full performance of “Don’t Want Anybody” in Times Square and a compilation of some of the days highlights as well. Check them out and leave us a comment!

Special thanks to Sarah Wolff and Ben Curtis (“Dude you’re getting a Dell!”) for helping out in a big way.

  1. 1pm – Washington Square Park
  2. 1:30pm – Le Poisson Rouge
  3. 2pm – Astor Place CUBE
  4. 2:30pm – Strand Book Store
  5. 3pm – Union Square Park
  6. 3:30 – The Flatiron Building
  7. 4pm – Madison Square Garden
  8. 4:30pm – Bryant Park
  9. 5pm – Times Square
  10. 5:30pm -Carnegie Hall
